Wirraway mirrim was formed in June 2005 and was for a short time known as the Koori Research Network while the group found a more appropriate name. Wirraway Mirrim comes from the Woi Wurung language group of the local Wurundjeri Nation and means to
challenge (wirraway) deeply (mirrim). The Victorian Aboriginal Language Group researched potential names for the group. Permission was sought and given from the Wurundjeri Elder to use Wirraway Mirrim.
The group was formed as there was a need for Aboriginal and Torres Stait Islander people to have an opportunity to meet and support each other at an organised forum.
The group has developed the following philosophies, values, principles and processes which are based on key components of respect, sharing, encouragement and learning.
